What cancer were you diagnosed with? Acute Myeloid Leukaemia
At what age were you diagnosed? 16
In the summer of 2012 I was experiencing increasing tiredness and dizziness but put it down to struggling with the summer heat. I was feeling a lot of nausea so I decided to see my GP. I had a couple of blood tests, and the first one told the doctor that I was anaemic, I was told that was probably the cause of my tiredness and dizziness. She prescribed me some Iron supplements and that was that. After a couple of days I was asked to do another blood test because something weird had come up on the last test. Instead of going to my GP to get the results I was sent straight to the Macmillan cancer centre where I was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). I left college and started chemotherapy ASAP. After six months of treatment I was told I was in remission and I have been now for the past two years.
From the time of my diagnosis to the present day, I still haven't really been able to react to, and process, having had cancer. I think that's why Trekstock's so great. There are times when you mention the word "cancer" and you definitely feel that your friends and family feel a bit uncomfortable. But with Trekstock you can say the word cancer as many times as you like without anyone going all quiet and awkward.
